Ajax has a lot of builder-grade appliances reaching the end of their run and a lot of first replacements. The Christmas Eve dishwasher and gas stove in our review record is an Ajax job, which is the shortest way to explain how we treat a delivery date.

Filler panels are where the width hides. In the Audley and Nottingham houses a builder fridge sits in an opening with a panel either side, and taking those off can free the inch or two that decides whether a wider replacement goes in or has to be sent back. The water line and the receptacle stay where the builder ran them, which is not always where the new machine wants them. We check both before a model is settled on.

In Ajax the plumbing usually arrives with the appliance: the water line to the fridge, the drain behind the washer, the disposal under the new sink. One visit covers all of it.

Plenty of houses in Audley and Nottingham came with a capped three-piece rough-in sitting unused in the basement floor. The drain positions were set under the slab the day the house was poured, so a basement bathroom has to follow the pipe rather than the other way round. We lift the caps and see what is genuinely there, the trap position and whether a vent was carried up, before anyone prices a vanity.

A fireplace that has sat idle since March is exactly the one that will not light on the first cold night in Ajax. That is a service call: we find the fault first, quote it, then carry out the repair.

North of Taunton the fireplaces are direct-vent units on an outside wall, and the terminal sits low enough that snow banked against the house or a shrub grown across it will shut one down. Closer to the lake around Duffin’s Bay, wind across the terminal can put a pilot out on its own. We look at the termination from outside before the front comes off the unit indoors.

Gas stove hookups are on our Ajax record by name. The line, the connection, the leak check and the lit-burner test are one visit, and the review that describes it is public.

On the newer streets north of Taunton, in Nottingham and Audley, the laundry sits on the main floor rather than in the basement. A gas dryer up there means the line leaves the basement, comes up inside a partition wall and terminates behind the machine, which is a different job from a drop beside the furnace. We work out where it can come up before we quote.
