City Centre towers want the service elevator booked and padded, the corridor protected, and the machine through a suite door narrower than anything in the kitchen behind it. In Mississauga, as everywhere, most of our plumbing work arrives attached to something else: the new dishwasher needs a supply, the new sink needs a disposal, the island wants a filtered tap. We do the fixture and the pipework in the same visit, because they are the same job.

The older Port Credit and Streetsville houses often still drain a kitchen into cast iron, and the material decides how the fix goes. Fitting a new trap is straightforward. Cutting into a stack that has stood in that wall since those streets were villages is not, because cast iron rots from the inside and looks sound until it is opened. We check what the branch is made of, and where it ties in, before quoting.

Fireplace service in Mississauga is seasonal work and it goes better booked early. The unit comes apart on a drop cloth, the burner and pilot are gone through, the glass goes back on clean, and the meter reads at the hearth before we leave.

In an Erin Mills or Meadowvale family house the tank, the furnace and the dryer usually share one small room, and they share its air. A dryer pushes air outside every cycle, and an atmospheric tank in the same room needs air coming back in to draw properly. If the door to that room has been sealed up during a basement finish, the tank is the appliance that suffers. We check the draw before we check the burner.

The most common Mississauga gas call is a kitchen going from electric to gas. That is a new line run to where the range is going, not just a connector, and it is far easier done while the backsplash is still off.

Lorne Park and Clarkson sit on deep lots, and a side-yard meter can be a long way from the back of the house. The line either follows the foundation outside or comes in through the rim joist and runs along the basement to the appliance. Either way the pipe arrives in threaded lengths and gets carried down the side of the house, so gates open, bins moved and the dog indoors helps more than people expect.
